You know you’re in for an interesting album when in the first song the singer screams “So, I mean, it’s cool if you keep quiet…but I LIKE SINGING!!!!!!!”. LIFTED or the Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground is my favorite Bright Eyes album. I’ve been listening to it non-stop this week (I’ve been home sick). The band is mostly just Conor Oberst with a few other people who aren’t permanently in the band. LIFTED or the Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground is a very theatrical album. Some of the songs have really long titles like “You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will.”.

Conor Oberst mostly speaks his lyrics…kind of like Johnny Cash, but his voice is nowhere near as deep. Each song tells a story. This album should be appreciated more for the lyrics than the actual music. Mainly because many of the songs lack a beat. But the lyrics are BEAUTIFUL. And if I may go off topic for a second…Conor Oberst is BEAUTIFUL too!

I would have to say that my favorite songs on this album are tied between “Lover I Don’t Have to Love” and “Waste of Paint”. These songs are both really different from eachother…but great nonetheless. “Lover I Don’t Have to Love” is really dark and composed mostly of keyboard. “Waste of Paint” is all guitar with Conor singing…and it’s not as depressing!
